The letter “H” must be the easiest of all the Spanish letters to pronounce as it is always silent, no matter where it is located in a word.
Many years ago in the history of the Spanish language the “H” did used to be pronounced. Over time almost all of the Spanish consonants have become softer and in the case of the “h” it has became so soft, as to become inaudible.
I will now give you some examples of Spanish words featuring the “H” and I would like you to repeat each word after me paying attention to the silent “H”. If you would like to see the meaning of any words you are unsure of please see the lesson notes.
Listen and repeat:
Prohibir: to prohibit, to ban
Ahorrar: to save
Alhaja: piece of jewelry
