In this Spanish lesson we will look at expressing purpose and reasons in Spanish with the Spanish Presente de Subjuntivo and Para, Para que, A, A que, A fin de, and A fin de que. We will learn, for example, how to describe the reason why someone has done something with phrases such as “Sonia ha venido a España a estudiar español” (Sonia has come to Spain to study Spanish) and how to explain “the best way” to do something with phrases such as “Lo mejor para que evites el cansancio es que duermas mucho” (The best way for you to avoid tiredness is sleeping a lot). These structures are very useful, but as always with the Spanish Subjunctive, they are not so easy to use, and certainly not without a bit of study and practice. Try your best to write out lots of practice example sentences using these new structures in combination with other Spanish vocabulary and grammar you have already learned and keep practising until they are fixed firmly in your mind. It is usually a good idea to practice with lots of written sentences before trying tricky new structures out in conversation. But, in saying that, you should also never be afraid to get out there and make a few mistakes!
