“El verbo Ser”: the verb “To be” in Spanish (I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, you are, they are.) This is one of the most important Spanish lessons in any beginner Spanish course. Once you are able to get your head around your first Spanish verb and the way you have to conjugate it for each of the different people (I, you, he, she, it, etc) then you are well on your way to success. The verb “To be” is fundamental to English and Spanish. We use it all of the time. Don’t get disheartened if you find this first introduction to Spanish verbs a little mind boggling at first, that is completely normal. The key is to be relaxed and open minded. You are learning a foreign language and the nature of the game is that this new language will be very different to your own native language and cause you a few headaches along the way. But these headaches, or challenges as we should better call them, are what make the process interesting and are the most important lessons to tackle and conquer in our quest.

Thank you for this post. My students watch your videos every once in awhile. One of the hardest things to distinguish in Spanish is the difference between Ser and Estar.

  2. Karina says:

What’s the other word for saying You (plural) are? I know there is vosotros sois, but what’s the other conjugation outside of Spain?

  3. Andreina Ledezma says:

Outside of Spain people use “ustedes son”, there is no formal and informal for the plural form.
